Pink for polar bear ISBN: 9780140388374

Nanook, 'the daughter of the setting sun', is a pink polar bear. She sadly thinks she is not like the other bears. Not only is she pink, but she doesn't like to swim or chase seals or catch fish. When she is marooned on an iceberg, she is saved by Gullak the seagull, who brings her fish and tells her wonderful stories about mermaids and flying fish and the singing humpback whales. One night Nanook hears the whales singing and is so enthralled by the sound that they give her the gift of song. After that, she never stops singing, and her sweet voice is heard all round the North Pole. It brings her a special friend, Koonan, 'son of the midday sky', a blue polar bear, and they rejoice in their different-ness. A lovely parable about being oneself, and the simple, softly coloured illustrations add greatly to the lyrical text.
