Jessica is a cat, but she lives in a family of mice and has only begun to realise she is different. Mum says, 'You're a beautiful mouse, even if you are rather big', and suggests that Jessica ask the other farm animals what they think she is. So Jessica sets off, and because each animal sees her differently, no one can identify her. However, wise Mrs Duck recognises the problem, and when Jessica confesses she thinks she may be a cat but wants to be a mouse so she can stay with her family, Mrs Duck says it doesn't matter what she is so long as she loves her family and they love her. So Jessica decides to be herself. Wonderful, warm, chalky illustrations of Jessica and her mouse family and all the farm animals. And the end papers are a treat!
