The little girl really does not want to go to school. Hauled away by her positive mum, she has a wonderful time on her first day, mostly because she meets Nicky. Her descriptions of Nicky lead her mum to expect a very different child to the one that appears - a sedate looking little black girl. Nicky is to have tea and sleep over with the little girl, but what neither child is expecting is that they will have to go to school again the next day. The medium of Tony Ross's anarchic illustrations appears to be crayon, and the drawings have a child-like quality. Delicious!
