Boots for a bridesmaid ISBN: 9781870516303

Nicky's mum uses a wheelchair. Only pictures show us this fact; nothing in the text mentions it at all, but we see mum living a normal life, driving a car, shopping, even dancing at her sister's wedding. The plot has to do with tomboy Nicky's not wanting to wear a frilly dress as bridesmaid at her Auntie Flora's wedding. Cricket is much more Nicky's style, and when she agrees to wear a dress with one frill if she can have red boots for the wedding as well, she is more or less happy. Nicky also has allergies - hayfever to be exact - so mum comes up with silk flowers for the bouquet. A gentle story in which disability is treated as the norm, and cheerful, realistic illustrations add much. The Spinal Injuries Association provides an afterward. Nicky's family is shown to be of mixed race.
