Our mum has Parkinson's ISBN: 9780953830305
Published by Parkinson's Disease Society of the U.K., 2000
This is a detailed story of Tom, Megan and Anna and their coping with their mum's Parkinson's Disease. Megan tells the story; there is lots about her mum's personality (bubbly and fun) and the problems PD causes the family. Dad has left, so Megan feels she must stay with mum if everyone is out. She talks honestly about embarrassing situations such as 'freezing' and her need to defend her mum against insensitive people. The family go on a retreat with the local Parkinson's group, and they meet new friends and participate in discussion groups - helpful to Megan. It is clear that the children must help around the house, but mum is a fighter, and there is much love in evidence. Honest, sometimes humourous (helped by the bright comic-style pictures), the book will provide a great deal of encouragement for children of PD sufferers.
