'The day my mother went away and came back with a baby, I got a cough.' And what a cough it is! This cough is a pixie/devil inside the little girl's mind, and it erupts whenever the baby is given extra attention. Her jealousy takes all the usual turns, but it is only when the cough eggs her on to do something that might harm the baby that her family finally see it as a 'very very VERY BAD COUGH' and start giving her the attention she craves. The naughty little cough then 'crept away in the night', and the little girl learns to enjoy her brother. Rees's big-eyed people are super expressive, and the rather Heath Robinson-ish illustrations are a joy. This will appeal to both children and adults, and is an original approach to a perennial problem.
