It is a dog, Milligan, who is jealous of a baby in this brilliant short book. Mrs Dembo is 'the love of Milligan's heart and tummy', and he is delighted to see her when she returns from four days away. But, he had not expected the thing-in-a-box. The Dembos seem very taken with it. They and all their friends and relatives make a great fuss of it, and Milligan is no longer their 'beautiful boy'. Furthermore, the thing-in-a-box makes the most fearful din. One evening when the Dembos have fallen sound asleep, Milligan hears the thing-in-a-box making its noise. He goes upstairs, thinking this is his chance to get rid of it, and discovers it is 'a hairless puppy'. Now he understands that the 'puppy' makes a noise because it is hungry. He wakes Mrs Dembo and becomes the hero of the hour. Thereafter, his new job is to help look after the baby. Comic style black and white illustrations, some with bubble dialogue, and lots of pictures on each page. Fun to look at as well as to read.
