Tanya's mum has just produced quads - two boys and two girls. This is a very mixed blessing so far as Tanya is concerned. The babies cry most of the time, her dad has lost his job because he falls asleep at work, and when she has the lead in the school play, neither of her parents can come. Grittily realistic about the horrors of trying to cope with four babies at once, Tanya's diary shows her feelings clearly - including the realisation that she is becoming more and more like her character in the play: Mary in The Secret Garden. Friends try to understand, but she will not let them. Natalie, a new friend, has her own problems, and it is only time, a new job for dad, and the babies settling somewhat that finally gives Tanya hope that all will be well. She learns to love the babies as individuals, and her resentment turns to acceptance. Often funny, but true to life as well.
