Judy Blume is good on family relationships and on the irritations they can cause. Neither Peter, 10, nor Fudge, 4, is happy about having a new baby in the family. Fudge hides Tootsie and tries to sell her; he also reverts to his baby habits, and everyone is in a state of exhaustion from sleepless nights. When Tootsie finally begins to settle, there is more upheaval when dad takes a leave of absence, and they move to Princeton for a year. The new house is lovely, but Peter is a New Yorker, and he doesn't like the change at all. Fudge isn't happy about having to sleep in a room by himself. Then Fudge starts school, and being bright and unusual, he begins all sorts of ructions. At the end of the year, the family decide that New York is the place for them after all. Funny and realistic.
