This is evidently based on a true story about a little 'Westie' who used to visit the young patients at Great Ormand Street Hospital. Dr. White came each morning and visited the sickest patients, lying on their beds and licking their faces and ultimately pulling them through serious illness. One day, a health inspector sees the dog and insists that he is removed. In a wholly expected sentimental reversal, the inspector's daughter becomes critically ill, and it is only Dr. White who can save her! Goodall makes the point in an author's note that times have changed and that Pet-Assisted Therapy is much more regulated these days. You don't have to believe the story to be moved by the quite stunning water colour illustrations. There is a high 'aaah...' factor here, and one should be careful that one's child does not expect to be visited while in hospital by a cuddly West Highland terrier!
