Going on a school trip ISBN: 9780749636708
Published by Franklin Watts (Friends series), 2000
Georgia is partially sighted, and she and her friend Kamilla are excited about going on a school trip to pick strawberries. We see some of Georgia's special equipment at school while she is learning about strawberries, and the whole class looks at a Braille display - unfortunately so high on the wall that it would be impossible for Georgia to see or feel it. We see Georgia at a sleepover at Kamilla's the night before the trip and also learn about bumps in the pavement that tell blind people where it is safe to cross. Georgia uses story tapes, but we aren't told if she also reads braille. The emphasis is on friendship and children sharing a happy day. There is an excellent double spread that shows the different ways that partially sighted people see. Specific ways of helping blind people are given, and there are some useful addresses. The bright photographs and graphic frames add to the upbeat cheerfulness. Recommended by the RNIB.
