Maddy is dyslexic. She has trouble with both reading and writing, though her maths is better. Having been bullied and teased at her old school, she has spent four weeks refusing to go to school at all until her mum convinces her to try a new one. In spite of a sympathetic teacher, the teasing starts again, and it is only weedy little Michael who is really friendly. On a trip to the Sheffield Millennium Galleries with her class, Maddy begins to learn about the Buffer Girls, the silver polishers who did a dirty job but were hardy and strong and stood up for themselves. In a time-slip episode Maddy works with the Buffer Girls and learns to stand firm; on her return she is able to explain to her tormentors what her dyslexia means. She is shown to be talented in art, and it is made clear that each individual has his or her own talents - even weedy Michael, who is good at mechanical things. One of the strengths of the book is its short length, perfect for those who find reading stressful. It also benefits from large-ish print and good black and white illustrations.
