What does it mean to have Down's syndrome ISBN: 9780431139357
Published by Heinemann (What Does It Mean To Be/Have series), 2002
Lots of upbeat information about what it's like to have Down's syndrome. Very clear on chromosomes and how they work and emphasises that Down's is not an illness or disease but simply part of that person. The book discusses health problems, physical differences and learning difficulties, but emphasises also that these can be slight or more major and that Down's people are basically like anyone else with the same hobbies, friends and interests. We meet three children with Down's and hear how they and their families live, and they are a happy, active bunch. An index, a glossary, a list of books and organizations (with websites) will provide further help. Very positive.
